It’s as easy as answering five questions
Austria joined the European Union in 1995, giving Austrian citizens the right to travel, study, work and live in any of the 28 EU countries without any additional permits or documents. People who are descendants of Austrian immigrants might have the right to Austrian citizenship regardless of where they were born or where they live.
Austrian emigration in the 19th and 20th centuries was not as sizable as that from other European countries. However, Austrians make-up important communities in the UK, US, Brazil, Uruguay, Australia and other countries. Today, there are millions of individuals living abroad who have the right to recover their Austrian citizenship and enjoy their rights as part of the European Union.
What are the benefits of Austrian Citizenship
Austrian citizenship provides numerous rights within the 28 countries of the European Union, the most important of which are:
A person with Austrian citizenship can live in any of the 28 countries of the EU without special visas,
A person with Austrian citizenship can work in any of the 28 countries of the EU without the need of applying for a work permit,
A person with Austrian citizenship has the right to an education at schools and universities within the territory of the 28 countries of the European Union and in some cases with preferential tuition,
A person with Austrian citizenship can perform entrepreneurial activities and set-up a company in any of the 28 countries of the EU.
Are you eligible?
The offspring of an Austrian great grandfather, grandfather or parents can be eligible, for Austrian citizenship. Up until the 1980’s Austrian Citizenship was only passed through men and passed only by women when they were not married at the time of birth of their children.
The Austrian Citizenship Law is based on the principle of “right of blood” (ius sanguinis), this means that an Austrian descendant may be eligible to acquire citizenship regardless of the place of birth.
Most Austrian citizens who naturalized lost their citizenship. However, they might be eligible to reclaim Austrian citizenship depending on the naturalization date and the date of birth of the next generation.
Special Treatment of Persecuted People
On November 1941 Nazi Germany stripped Austrian Jews and other people of their citizenship. This means that every Austrian Jew was denaturalized and subject to deportation. After the end of World War II the right to citizenship was restored and Jews were given the right to reclaim citizenship through a naturalization process. Therefore, if your ancestors were Jewish and naturalized after November 1941, you might still be eligible to apply for citizenship.
Recent changes in the Austrian law temporarily grant the right to citizenship to the children of Austrian mothers, even when they were born before 1985. However, there are additional requirements, such as presenting a certificate that proves B1 level of German language knowledge. This option is set to expire by April 30, 2014.
