The law was sponsored by the Jewish Community of Portugal and was approved by the Government of Portugal to facilitate the granting of Portuguese citizenship to descendants of Jews expelled from Portugal.
In Portugal, there is now a law and regulations to grant nationality to descendants of Sephardic Jews.
On July 3, 2013 the amendment to the Nationality Act was unanimously approved by the Portuguese Parliament, allowing descendants of Sephardic Jews to apply for Portuguese nationality.
Its regulations were approved by the Council of Ministers and published today, January 29, 2015, so applications can be accepted.
How does it work?
In accordance with the regulations of the Portuguese Nationality Act, the applicant must obtain a Certificate from the Portuguese Jewish communities in Oporto or Lisbon, attesting to his or her ties to a Sephardic Jewish community of Portuguese origin.
Evidence of family history of the applicant for connections to a Sephardic community of Portuguese origin may be provided through different documents, testimonies and forensic evidence. The documentary evidence has the most validity for the issuance of the document proving the Portuguese-Sephardic descent of the applicant.
Once the applicant has received a certificate from one of the Portuguese Jewish communities, the applicant should seek the advice of a firm specializing in the consultancy, preparation and submission of documents required by the Government of Portugal.
GetEUPassport (www.geteupassport.com) is a firm established in Mexico, and the United States has specialized in applications of this nature for over ten years.
The candidate does not need to be in Portugal in person in order to obtain Portuguese citizenship.
How long will it take to obtain nationality?
On average, from the time an application for Portuguese nationality is submitted to the Government of Portugal, nationality is effectively granted in approximately four months. However, this may change depending on the number of applications the Government of Portugal receives for processing.
Is it necessary to renounce the nationality of origin to be granted Portuguese nationality?
No. However, some nationalities may be lost when acquiring a new nationality, so it is worth seeking advice.
Are there lists of surnames of Sephardic origin? Do they serve as the only proof of entitlement to a nationality?
No, but this could be used as an additional argument.

Must the candidate be Jewish?
They do not necessarily have to belong to a Jewish community at present, but ultimately they must prove their Portuguese-Sephardic ancestry. Who is the ideal candidate?
A person who belongs to a Jewish community with at least one Sephardic surname (and ancestors that are natives of Portugal), who can prove their Portuguese-Sephardic origin using documents.
