What Exactly Is ETIAS?
ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization system designed by the European Union for travelers from countries that currently do not require a visa to enter the Schengen Area. Its purpose is to strengthen border security by allowing authorities to pre-screen visitors before arrival.
After several technical delays, the European Union has confirmed that ETIAS will be introduced gradually, with full implementation expected by the end of 2026.
This authorization will apply to citizens of more than 60 countries that currently benefit from visa-free access, including most Latin American countries, as well as the United States and Canada.
The application process will be 100% online through the official website or mobile app. Most applications are expected to be approved automatically within minutes or a few hours.
Cost and Validity
The official fee is €7. Applicants under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee, although they are still required to obtain the authorization.
The authorization will be valid for three years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows multiple entries for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
