Greek Citizenship - GetEUPassport

Greece recognizes the right to citizenship for descendants of Greek citizens and imposes no generational limit on applications. If you have Greek heritage and can substantiate it with documentation, the Greek State considers you a citizen from birth.

01
Children and Grandchildren of Greek Citizens

If you can demonstrate that you have a direct ancestor (parent or grandparent) who was born in Greece and was registered in a Greek municipality (Dimos), you are entitled to citizenship. Current law protects the maternal and paternal lines equally.

✓ / ✗ Examples
YES: Your grandmother was born in Athens and emigrated. Your mother was born before the 1984 equality reforms and never applied for a passport.

NO: You claim Greek ancestry, but your ancestor was born in a territory that did not form part of the Greek State at the time, or was never registered in an official municipality.
02
Great-Grandchildren and More Distant Lines — Documentary Reconstruction

If your great-grandfather was born in Greece and emigrated more than one hundred years ago, the process requires locating the birth certificate in the municipality (Dimos) of origin in order to reconstruct the legal chain.

✓ Example
YES: Your great-grandfather was born in Thessaloniki and emigrated in 1920. Neither your grandfather nor your father ever registered with the consulate. If we locate the birth certificate in his Dimos, we can reconstruct the legal chain and proceed with your passport application.
Important: Without a registration in the Dimotológio or recognized parish records, there is no legal basis upon which to initiate recognition.
