Spain offers several pathways to citizenship, including citizenship by descent for children of Spanish nationals, citizenship by residency, and citizenship by letter of naturalization.

Children of a Spanish-Born Parent

Direct descendants of a Spanish national born in Spain may apply for citizenship at any time, with no time limit.

YES: Your father was born in Spain and emigrated to Mexico; you were born abroad while he remained a Spanish citizen.

Children of a Spanish Parent Born Outside Spain

If the child is a minor at the time the parent receives Spanish citizenship, they may apply by option up to the age of 20.

✓ Qualifying Example

YES: Your mother obtained Spanish citizenship and you were a minor at that time — you may apply before reaching the age of 20.

Residency

Citizenship may be applied for by those who have legally resided in Spain for a minimum period: 2 years for citizens of Ibero-American countries, 10 years for all others. Spouses of Spanish nationals may apply after one and a half years of continuous legal residency.

YES: You wish to relocate to Spain as a digital nomad or retiree — you may apply for citizenship after 2 years of legal residency.

YES: Your spouse is a Spanish national — you may obtain citizenship after one and a half years of legal residency.

Letter of Naturalization (Sephardic Pathway)

Available to descendants of Sephardic Jews who did not initiate the process under the specific law. The grant is issued by royal decree and is entirely discretionary — a strong supporting case is required.
